Taupo players took hold of the John Wilkie Memorial trophy on Queens Birthday weekend. Played twice-yearly on a home and away basis between Taupo and Wainui Green from Hutt Valley, a men's and ladies team of eight competed in what has become a most enjoyable tournament between friendships that have built up over the years. In the men's match,Taupo built up a handy lead at the completion of the pairs and went into the singles 12-4 in front. They maintained their grip on the match through the singles to record a 18-6 win.
This provided a good buffer for the ladies who put out what could be considered not their strongest combination. they punched well above their weight to lose by just two games,13-11.Taupo will travel to Wainui in November to try and retain the trophy 'on the road's feat that has not been done yet.
